Matteson, nephew of Paul Van Vickle, provided the following information via
series of April 2007 emails. "My uncle Paul was 8 in 1910 and was
living with a family by the name of Skinner and that family helped raise him
until he joined the Marine Corps. Paul's biological father was named Charles
and he abandoned Paul and his mother when Paul was 8 and started a new family.
It is thought that Charles was one of perhaps 7 boys and that he may have moved
from Minnesota to Illinois." There appear to be two men by
the name of "Charles Van Vickle" who are likely candidates for the
biological father of Paul. Until we know with more certainty, we will leave
Paul on this page as well as make mention of the possibilities on the two
Charles Van Vickle family pages in question.
1. Charles^9 Van Vickle (Evert^8,
Enoch^7, Evert^6 Van Vickle, Evert^5 Van Wicklen, Frederick^4, Evert^3,
Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 18 May 1878, Vermilion, IL [Information
from Robert Matteson - "I have a death certificate for Paul C. Van Vickle
and his mother's name was Ethel Skinner and it said she was deceased. After
1900 I can find no trace of Ethel, but in 1910 there is a Paul Van Vickle with
the family of Alon Skrine [Skirm? difficult to read on census] and Paul is
listed as a grandson. Most likely Skrine or Skirm is actually the surname
Skinner. There is a 1900 census for Robert Skinner age 40 and wife Sarah, 42,
married 19 years, with two children--Ethel, 18, and Walter, 10. In 1910 there
is a census entry for Alon Skrine, 50 and wife Froney, 52, married 29 years
with a son Walter, age 20. These two families are most likely one and the same.
If one
clicks on the above link for Charles Van Vickle and then clicks on link for
Charles' father, Evert, one will see that Charles has several brothers. There
doesn't appear to be any migration from Minnesota in this family, however. The
fact that this Charles is listed as married to Diana Claypool and has three
children born between 1903 and 1909, is not inconsistent with him possibly
having a son, Paul, by an Ethel Skinner abt 1902 who appears to have died
either in childbirth or shortly thereafter.
2. Charles^9 Van Vickle (Robert^8,
Enoch^7, Evert^6 Van Vickle, Evert^5 Van Wicklen, Frederick^4, Evert^3,
Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 3 Sep 1886, MN This Charles is the son of Robert
and Julia Van Vickle. This Charles also has multiple brothers and, Robert
apparently moved from Vermilion County, IL to Minnesota before Charles was
born. Then Robert and family are back in Vermilion County by the time of the
1900 census. The trouble with this Charles is that he is only 13 at the time of
the 1900 Census and would have been only 15 at the birth of Paul. Now if this
Charles were indeed the father of Paul, it could explain why Paul was reared by
his maternal grandparents and perhaps he was given the name Van Vickle after
his father, in that his mother, Ethel, died either at the time of Paul's birth
or shortly thereafter. This Charles marries much later in his 40s and has
several children.
Almost
certainly one of these two "Charles Van Vickles" is the biological
father of Paul C. Van Vickle.
(7/5/05 - Appears to be VanSickle or VanBickle) Roy E. Van Vickle 1920 US
Census for Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa lists Roy E. Van Vickle, head, 43, b. IL (OH, OH)
policeman, with wife, Helen A., 37, b. IA (NY, IA), dau., Edna E., 16, b. OK
(IL, OA), and dau., Hazel, 8, b. IA (IL, IA)
Van Vickle
(misc.) There is an
unidentified male born 1804-10 in the 1820 census of Evert^5 in Ohio. Evert^6
who went to Illinois may have had more sons. Absalom^6 of Pickaway Co., Ohio
had a son 1804-10 not identified. (The wills of Elizabeth (Butler Co., OH 1822)
and Robert (Darke Co., OH 1848) would probably help straighten out some other
uncertainties. (submitted by Harry Macy, August 2000)

The Brooklyn Eagle, 19 August, 1887, page has an article on John W.
Van Wickel. Caught in his own trap. John Van Wickel arranges a meeting with
a wife he had deserted. John W. Van Wickel and Kittie Cling were married in
Newark, NJ three years ago and at once began housekeeping. The husband was then
but 18 years of age and the wife had not yet reached her 15th birthday. Van
Wickel worked at his trade as a carpenter, earned good wages and the young
couple got along nicely together for a time. then the
young husband's attitude toward his wife changed. He worked very little and
failed to provide the household necessities. they
lived together at various places in Newark, until two weeks ago when Van Wickel
deserted his wife and from a letter she received from him she learned that he
had journeyed to this city. She followed and made a home with relatives on
Franklin Avenue at whose advice she went to Justice Kenna's court and obtained
a warrant for her husband's arrest charging him with abandonment. Office DeClue
of the Charities Department, took the warrant, but as Van Wickel's residence in
Brooklyn was unknown it was a hard thing to find him. His wife's whereabouts
seemed to be known to him, however, as yesterday morning Mrs. Van Wickel
received a letter, of which the follow is a verbatim copy:
Mrs.
Van Wickel: I have come to the conclusion that I cannot live with you any
longer, for we cannot agree, so we must part. You have told me often that I
could go and I intend doing so. I thought I would wright to you to see if you
would sine papers for a divorce. Would like to see you to-night on the Brooklyn
side of Grand Street Ferry at 7:30PM. August 18, 1887
John W. Van Wickel
Mrs.
Van Wickel was there at the hour named and with her was Officer De Clue. The
accused husband came along and was placed under arrest. This morning he was
held for trial by Justice Kenna.

married Harvey Van Wickle and then remarries to Gardner Stewart in 1885. Harvey
cannot be found after 1880 US Census. Gardner Stewart then marries (2nd
marriage) to Josephine Thayer, although his three daughters are by marriage to
Clarissa (Buell) Van Wickle. There is some conjecture here. A fuller
explication of details can be found on the family page for Harvey and Clarissa Van Wickle.)

on 1920 and 1930 US Census data originally supplied in 16 Sept 2002 email by

(There is also an entry in familysearch.com that lists Julia DeLaney (b. Apr
1874, NY) married to Edward (b. NJ) on 3 Jul 1899. Julia is d/o of Patrick and
Mary (Purcell) Delaney, and Edward is listed as son of Irving and Ellen (Curtis)
Van Wickle. My best
guess at this point is that Edward is the son of Isaac Van Wickle, b. 1848--the
son of Isaac and Sarah Van Wickle. In 1870
USC, Isaac is unmarried, age 22, and living with his father, stepmother, and
younger sister. The 1880 US Census for E. New Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ lists Isaac Van Winckle,
widowed, age 30, farmer, b. NJ (NJ, NJ) with Maria (his single aunt), 80,
keeping house, and Ella Rogers, 14, single, servant. It
appears that Isaac got married after 1870 and his wife died prior to 1880 in
order for him to be listed as a widower in 1880. That leaves room for the
possibility that he married Ellen Curtis abt. 1874 and she may have died giving
birth to Edward (b. 27 Apr 1875) or shortly thereafter. We clearly see Edward
Van Wickle (who married Julia Delaney in 1899) in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and
1930 US Census pages...but I have been unable to locate Edward ANYWHERE as a
five year old child in the 1880 census, and the 1890 census is unavailable. I
did find an Ellen Curtis, age 18 (b. IL), in a boarding school in Elizabeth,
Union, NJ in the 1870 US Census who is one possibility for Isaac's wife. There
is also the intriguing coincidence that Edward leaves NJ at some point and goes
to NY to become a designer of women's clothing/fashion. There was an Ellen
[Curtis] Demorest (1824-1896), wife of William Jennings Demorest, who was a
famous women's dress/fashion designer in NYC. Ellen designed the dress patterns
and husband, William, published them in his magazine. This may all be just a
coincidence or perhaps Edward's mother, Ellen Curtis, was somehow connected to
Ellen (Curtis) Demorest...and she gave him a start in the trade. There is just
not quite enough information to firmly establish Edward as the son of Isaac^8
Van Wickle, b. 1848...at this point. Perhaps someone will locate a critical
piece of evidence that cements the connection.

Nicholas Van

Philadelphia, PA to M. Donaldson) (familysearch.com) (Could this
be the son of Stephen and
Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) Van Wickle? According to Barbara Likos via 3 Jan
2011, Nicholas Holmes Van Wickle, married to Katherine Quinn, is the son of
Stephen and Mary Elizabeth Van Wickle)
Nicholas
Van Wickle written
about on pages 57, 87-88, and 91 in History of Allegany County along with other
information about Evert Van Wickle and his son, Samuel Van Wickle. The
historical account indicates that Nicholas was an early surveyor of Allegany
County and that the AC Board of Supervisors, in 1826, passed a resolution
directing Nicholas to make maps of Allegany County and its several towns
provided that the cost does not exceed $100. Also, in 1828 and again in 1831,
the AC Board of Supervisors elected Nicholas Van Wickle as county clerk. (Could
this Nicholas be a previously unidentified son of Evert Van Wickle?)

Concklin families. Household includes one male under 5, one 5-10, 1 30-40

Harrington, Bergen, NJ lists Richard Van Winkle as head of a household among the
households of John Powles Conkling [neighboring south], Albert Cooper [across
the road], and David Conkling. The household includes one male under 5, one
male 10-15, one 15-20, one 40-50 [Richard] and one female 30-40 [Phebe
(Conklin) Van Wickel]. 1850 US Census for

Census for Palisades, Rockland, Orange, NY lists Richard Van Wickle,
62, Carpet man, as head of household with Phebe Ann, 54, wife. http://www.rockleigh.org/History/Sites/VanWickel_Moore_House.htm) Van Wickel-Moore House c. 1810-1823. These lands, part of
the 1685 Historic Lockhart Patent were bitterly claimed by NJ and NY until the
1769 Boundary Settlement. Here Richard Van Wickel and wife Phebe, dau. of Jacob Conklin, III. built (or
renovated) this federal style farmhouse c. 1828 on 5 and 3/4 acres she
inherited. Her cousin, Phebe Ann Moore, wife of John V.K. Moore bought the
property in 1832. In 1848 she added 25 acres. Borough Hill now stands on part
of the tract. House held by Moores to 1938. The c. 1810-1823 section of the
dwelling is a steep 1 and 1/2 story clapboard frame structure on the east side
of Rockleigh Rd. (No. 36) The interior floor plan shows evidence of a narrow
side hall construction. There is a living room on the main floor with a loft
above that has been finished into two small bedrooms and bath. The interior
walls are plastered. The living room mantle, Parsons cupboard
and some interior framing are of the Federal style. Some of the original
floorboards have been covered with modern day flooring. A window marks the
location of the original front entrance. The north side of the house has two
small windows just below the roofline which is characteristic of a possibly earlier
date. A small wing has been added to the south side of the house to include a
present day small kitchen, additional bedroom and bath. The exterior walls of
this later wing are clapboard. to the rear of the
dwelling is a fine extent example of a "necessary building" currently
used as a shed. In the 1960s Burl Ives, balladeer and folk music historian
lived in a small outbuilding near the barn site before the property was
subdivided in the early 1970s.

son, at home, and Benjamin Van Wicklen, 28, brother-in-law, tinsmith. (There is
a possibility that Ann Amelia is a daughter of Foster^8 and Mary Ann [Ryder]
Van Wickler. The reason for suspecting this is that in the 1880 US Census (see
above) Ann Amelia's brother, Benjamin, a tinsmith, is residing with her. He is
the same age as Benjamin Van Wickler, son of Foster^8, who is also listed as a
tinsmith on census pages. No census data can be found that lists Ann Amelia in
the household of Foster, including the 1850 census where she is a young child.
However, we find Ann Amelia in the household of H. and Phebe Langdon in the
1850 census...and married to Garrett Nostrand in the 1870 US Census with a 10
year old daughter, Annie, suggesting an early marriage at age 13 or 14.

Arthur is the son of Daniel and Julia Van
Wicklen. Both Daniel and Julia are b. NY and they move west in that their
daughter, Eva, is b. abt 1867 in Wisconsin. The Arthur VW here was b. in
Kansas. Daniel fights in Civil War in both NY and Indiana regiments and then
files from Kansas as invalid for pension in 1884, and Julia files for pension
in a subsequent year (1888?) also from Kansas. Daniel Van Wicklen also
appears on 837 N. Kansas Avenue, Kansas City, KS in 1889-1890 with occupation
of broommaker. A search of 1880 US Census data did not locate Daniel, Julia, Eva,

female age 60-70, one female age 30-40, 1 female age 10-15 and two females
under age five. This might be Cornelius and wife with one of their mothers and
six children. The closest match in the family pages would be Cornelius^7 Van Wickle, son of Evert^7

Daniel Van
Wicklen - There
is a Daniel Van Wicklen, son of Hannah (Stilwell) Foster (see Hannah
Foster/Van Wicklen entry below and also John Foster Van Wickler entry below)
who married second to an unknown Van Wickler or Van Wicklen. He is the father
of Clarissa, Sarah Frances, and Matilda who reside with the Doty family in the
1870 US Census. Any possibility that the Daniel Van Wicklen (one entry above)
who resides with daughter, Sarah (age 15) in Oyster Bay at time of 1850 Census
is this Daniel Van Wicklen?) Currently, I have this Daniel VW of the 1850
US Census as Daniel and Elizabeth Ann

in Brooklyn, Kings, NY with wife, Mary, age 72 (b. abt 1848, NY) and Jennette
Van Wicklen, age 24 (b. abt 1896, NY). Relationship of Jennette to David and
Mary is unclear. He is buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY (Lot 504,
deed 1866; source, Headstone Inscription).
David and
Emma Van Wicklen listed in 1880 US Census for Brooklyn, Kings, NY as David Van
Wicklen, head of household, 30, NY, retail milk dealer (mother and father both
b. NY) with Emma Van Wicklen, wife, 27, b. NY (father b. CT and mother b. NY). Possibly
this is David^7 Van Wicklen, son of Jonathan and Hannah
Sharp (Williams) Van Wicklen Two problems with this: 1) David, the son of
Jonathan and Hannah is listed on that family page as married to Mary. 2)
Hannah, David's mother, is listed as b. NJ whereas the David in the 1880
Brooklyn, NY census has a mother listed as b in NY.

Which GARRET
VAN WICKLEN is this? Plan of pews and names of pew holders in First Church 1785,
Jamaica, Queens, NY lists Garret Van Wicklen in
Seat 14 of Row 3, Center aisle. Who is this Garret Van Wicklen? Garret^3
(Gerrit^2, Jentie^1) dies before 1782. His son, Garret^4 dies by 1777.
Garret^4's first son, Garret^5, dies young and presumably before the birth of a
second Garret^5 in 1774. The latter Garret^5 would only be 11 in 1785 and
therefore to young for this church pew. Paul^4 (Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1)
has a son Garret b. in 1750s but he is migrating north by 1785 en route to
Canada. He married Rachel Frost in Rhinebeck RDC in 1783. Perhaps the seat was
purchased by Garret^3 or Garret^4 prior to 1785 and one of them is still listed
as the pew holder, even though deceased? (First Reformed Dutch Church
seating in 1785 listed on NYBROOLYN-L@rootsweb.com)

George and
Henrietta (Eiring) Van Wicklen (information received from Bill McMullen of Galveston, TX. in 7
July 2002 email. Henrietta was his aunt.) My aunt (Henrietta [Eiring] Van
Wicklen) passed away recently and in going through her jewelry and papers we
found a set of wedding rings (engagement and wedding ring) inscribed GVW to HE
and the date was 6 June 1936. We also found a congratulatory birthday telegram
to her as Henrietta Van Wicklen at 112 Noble Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY
from her sister Ema and Emma's husband George. Henrietta was born and raised in
that neighborhood and her parents lived on Meeker Ave. This is a previously
unknown marriage of hers. She was b. in 1918 and married G. Van Wicklen at the
age of 18 in 1936. In the fall of 1938 from other correspondence to the same
address, George Thorsen wrote to her as Henrietta Eiring -- which was her
maiden name (HE). She was apparently married for not more than a period of two
years to GVW. The marriage ended and she assumed her maiden name. She married
George Thorsen on 5 June 1943. They were my aunt and uncle. I have pictures of
Henrietta and George Van Wicklin. He appears to be 23 or 24. Fairly short and
slender, wavy hair parted down the middle, and rather dapper and well dressed
for the depression. The engagement ring has a medium sized diamond in it and
the wedding band is fully set in diamonds. For 1936 this suggests a measure of
prosperity. The pictures I have were taken in Atlantic City, NJ and I think it
was their honeymoon. There is a billboard in the background that tells one what
is playing at the Steel Pier and announces the famous diving horses which the
Steel Pier was noted for. We also have an 8x10 of them as members of a wedding
party where there are 3 couples; the bride and groom and two others. The groom
looks like he might be a brother to George VW. That wedding must have taken
place between 1936 and 1938. (Harry Macy response dated 18 July
2002 - "I looked up this marriage in the New York City Index, and the
groom is given as George Van Wicklen, Jr. so his father must have been a George
born before 1900. That may help us identify him. The marriage certificate is
Brooklyn 1936 no. 8682, dated 6 June 1936. A copy can be obtained for $5 from
the NYC Municipal Archives. Response from Michael Wolfe dated 13 July
2002 -- "My family was of Greenpoint during the second half of the 19th
century, ran lumberyards and lumber mills [powered by tidal currents up the
east river]. Many of the VWs were builders. My great grandfather, John Youngs
Van Wicklen had his house and lumber yards a few blocks from 112 Noble Street
but I do not have any information on your George and Henrietta. I have a pretty
good completeness of this branch of the tree and this George is not a part.
There is a possibility that he came across the creek from Newtown where there
were several VW families expanding out from Jamaica, NY. Reply from
William McMullen dated 13 July 2002 -- My wife was doing some sleuthing on this
and through the Social Security Death Index we found George Van Wicklen b. 27
March 1916 and who died on 30 May 1997 -- SSN 094 05 4821. This would fit the
time frame for a man who was two years older than my aunt (1916 v. 1918). His
last known residence was Utica, NY 13501. My aunt's SSN started with 096 so the
geographic region of birth matches and since people were far less mobile in
those days, that may be useful. She also found a
George Van Wicklen b. in 1892. (Perhaps this is George, Jr.'s father?)

Jannetye Van
Wicklen The following 16 May 2008 email from Marie Roberts of Three
Lakes, WI suggests a "missing" Van Wicklen daughter from very early
on in the VW ancestry. Says Marie -- "I have been working for 18 years now on my
Hubbs family in particular. After much digging I have come to the conclusion
that there is a possibility of a missing Van Wicklen daughter as follows:"
Charles Hubbs b. abt. 1710 Oyster
Bay/Hempstead, NY married a woman named Jane Nagle(Naegle-Naugles),
b. abt. 1710-1712. Tracking her parentage, I feel I have found her father
Jacobus Nagle(Naegle-Naugles - spelled many different
ways in the old records) b. 1687 in Bushwick, L.I. NY and died after 1754 (when
he was mentioned in his father's will). This Jacobus Nagle lived right in the
Oyster Bay area near the Hubbs family. I mention the father and mother's
name of this Jacobus below because there were two Jacobus' born in the same
area within 4 years of each other and the other one reportedly died
young.
Jacobus' parents were Jeurian Jan
Nagel and Jannetye Philips Langelaen. In looking for marriage records for
Jacobus, I did not find one, but I found the baptism of a daughter Jannetye
(Jane) over in Bucks Co. 1712. to Jacobus Nagle and
Jannetye Van Wicklen. How or why they would have had a daughter baptized over
there I cannot explain, but I can tell you that there are no Nagels or Van
Wicklens in any of those early tax records or land records that would apply to
that particular time. My thinking then is that they were visiting friends
or maybe a favorite preacher had gone there. Child was baptized at the
Dutch Reformed Church Bensalem.
Reviewing your data, it seems to me
that this Jannetye would fit right into your family of Janz Van Wicklen and
Tryntje Gerrits. I wonder if there was ever any speculation of missing
daughters for this family?

Wicklen "in the news"- Brooklyn Eagle 18 February 1886, page 4. Breach of Promise. A
fashionable young lady takes her grievance to court. Justice George
Wallace, of Freeport, issued a warrant this morning for the arrest of John H.
Van Wicklen, of Lawrence, and Constable Wright was directed to serve it at
once. The fair complainant is Miss Nettie Shaw. She was accompanied to court by
her counsel, George A. Mott. Miss Shaw told the old story of a misplaced trust.
She says Mr. Van Wicklen asked her to marry him and before giving her consent
she consulted with her mother and aunt, and in their presence the engagement
was made. The betrothed couple attended all the balls and soirees, and as the
day for their marriage approached, society in Lawrence, by reason of certain
events, busied itself not a little with the affair, the result being that Van
Wicklen asked for a postponement of the wedding, which was refused. Then
followed a disagreement which resulted in an estrangement, with the result that
Van Wicklen is probably by this time fast in the clutches of the law. [This

will be committed to the asylum at Middletown. Miss Van Wicklen was a resident
of Brooklyn formerly, and, being afflicted with the same hallucinations, was
committed to the asylum at Flatbush. After six months treatment she was
discharged as cured. (This is most likely Mina Van Wicklen, daughter of Andrew^7 Van Wicklen. It might also be
Minnie Van Wicklen, the daughter of William^7

Sarah Jane (Sheridan) Van Wicklen (b. abt 1840, NY) wife of William^7 Henry Van Wicklen? If so, then
perhaps Ella was the wife of Adelbert Van Wicklen. His family information is
not known, except that it appears that Adelbert was alive in 1938...so why is
he not in the household with Ella in the 1920 and 1930 census? Divorced or

William Van
Wicklin -- Brooklyn
Eagle article (4 Aug 1893), page 5 -- Little Morning Blazes. At 2 O'Clock this
morning fire broke out in the cellar of the three story brick house at 141
Court Street. The tenants were scared but the damage was slight. There was a
fire in the bake shop of William Van Wicklen
at 291 Seventh Avenue, started by fat boiling over, at 4 O'clock this morning.
The flames that resulted damaged the house to the extent of $1500. (Not sure
at this point which William this is. Perhaps a census will identify the William
with the occupation of "baker.")
William Van
Wicklen -- Brooklyn
Eagle article (16 July 1880, page 3) entitled "Sensible Jurymen"
tells the story of a feud between Sunday Observance Association and liquor
dealers in Queens County. Apparently the Sunday Observance association was
trying to entrap liquor dealings by having men to secretly induce liquor
dealers to violate the law for purposes of complaining against them. One such
"agent" of the association was William Van Wicklen. The article refers
to him and a Thomas Smith as third rate farmers who make more money out of the
association then out of their farms beside having free
rum and cigars. Ex-judge Busteed handled William VW "roughly",
claiming he used to be a member of the Woodhaven Congregational Church, but
left owing to a threat of investigation into his relations with one of the
church "sisters." His own wife was in a lunatic asylum and he
(William) used to go on drunks himself. (Best guess is that this is William McKee Van Wicklen because his
family is connected to Woodhaven and this church and the family had farms in
the area at that time. However, William is listed is a census as being a
"policeman." For now this story remains on the stray page until we
get better evidence as to which William this really is.)
William Van

oddity here is that this William claims to be b. in Holland and lists himself
as immigrating to US in 1892, thus having been in US for 8 years.)

[LOCATED: with the
assistance of Diane Matthews via 29 Mar 2012 email. This is John
Foster Van Wickler and the details on his family page clarify most of these
quetions.] Foster
Van Wickler, of Far
Rockaway, NY was married by Rev. David Holman to Cornelia Ann Berry, of
Jamaica, on 4 November 1846 in [Near] Rockaway, Queens Co., NY, possibly at the
Lawrence Methodist-Episcopal Church (Announced in "The Long
Islander" on 20 November 1846; information sent via 11 August 2004 email
from Marie Velardi) (This Foster cannot be the son of Cornelius and Nancy Ann (Foster) Van Wickle
who is married to Mary Ann Ryder in that Foster and Mary appear in both the
1850 and 1860 US Census. This may conceivably be John Foster Van Wickler who marries
Sarah Chichester in 1858. However, why are the children of the previous
marriage--James, Emma, and Susan--not in the household of John and Sarah at a
later date? Another possibility is that there is a third Foster not accounted
for to date. ) Cornelia
Berry is the daughter of Richard and Rachel (Foster) Berry. Rachel (Foster)
Berry is the daughter of John and Hannah (Stilwell) Foster and the sister of
Nancy Ann Foster [mother of Foster Van Wickler]and
Marie Foster [Mother of John Foster Van Wickler]. So...if Cornelia Berry did
indeed marry John Foster Van Wickler, she married her first cousin or her
mother's sister's son. Stilwell Petition lists children of Cornelia Van Wicklen, deceased child of
Rachel Berry, deceased daughter of said Hannah Foster, deceased, an aunt: James
Van Wicklen in Brooklyn; Emma Van Wicklen in Brooklyn, and Susan Kirley Lenz in
Jamaica. W. A. Eardeley adds another daughter to this family, Cornelia Ann Van
Wickler, who married a Mr. Gilmore. Samuel Stilwell petition transcribed by
William A Eardeley and included as part of the 1924 Combs genealogy, courtesy,

abt 1829, NY) with one daughter, Susan Van Wicklen, 3 (b. abt 1846, NY) Any
possibility this is John Foster Van Wicklen (see below) who married Sarah Ann

Some
speculations on a few stray Van Wicklins. Clarissa Chloe Van Wicklin (b. 1819,
Ontario, CAN), Benjamin Van Wicklin (b. 1824, Toronto, York, Ontario, CAN),
Daniel Van Wicklin (b. 1827, Can West), and Paul Van Wicklin (b. 1832, Can
West) would all appear to be siblings and quite possibly the children of
Benjamin Van Wicklin (b. abt 1791, NY; the son of Garret and Rachel (Frost) Van
Wicklin. James Van Wicklin (b. 1825, IL) and R. W. Van Wicklin (b. 1826,
IL) would appear to be brothers given the locale of their births. However, it
is not clear who the father would be that would have migrated from Canada to
Illinois by 1825. More detail below on each of these individuals. Most
likely...all are descended from Garret and Rachel Van Wicklin in that the
lineages of John Van Wicklin and Isaac Van Wicklin are more certain.
LOCATED: Abram Van Wicklin (d. 29 December 1899, St. Thomas,

Abram Van Wicklin in Elgin (age 78 in 1871 census) and this is most likely the
son of Garret and Rachel (Frost) Van Wicklin of Cramahe Township but the death
date for this Abram would make it highly unlikely that an Abram b. in 1792 d.
in 1899. Might be a son, grandson, nephew... This Abram is Abram^8 Van

(Benjamin
Van Wicklin, b. abt 1791, NY, son of Garret and Rachel (Frost) Van Wicklin of

Benjamin noted above. Benjamin was in household of Garret in 1809 but by 1822
census he heads his own household at age 34. By 1823 he has removed to another
township. Perhaps this Benjamin can be located in the 1824 York County census.
If so, then he is most likely the father of Benjamin Van Wicklin (above) who
was b. in York County, Ont. Dec. 1824 or 1826.)

Methodist, Witnesses were Thomas Trest and Eli Ally. (submitted by Judy Houston in 17 August 2000 email from
Marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada West Vol 7, Part 1 - Newcastle
District 1810-1848.) (The following information was provided by
Judith Zieg, great great granddaughter of Clarissa/Chloe Van Wicklin, in an
email dated 25 April 2004: Clarissa Chloe Van Wicklin was born 5 March 1819 in
Corunna, Lambton, Ontario, Canada and died after 1880 in Elgin, Kane, Illinois
(probably). She married (1) Mr. Washburn before 1843 in Canada. She married (2)
Isaac Rogers, 13 January 1849 in McHenry, Illinois, son of Isaac Rogers and
Mary Moulton. He was b. 29 April 1794 in Hanover, Grafton, New Hampshire and d.
30 April 1861 in Evansville, Vanderburgh, IN (not proved). Judith
adds the following information... "My great grandmother was Mary Matilda
Rogers, first daughter of Clarissa (Chloe) Washburn and Isaac Rogers. Mary was
b. in Algonquin, McHenry County, Illinois in 1846. In the 1850 McHenry County
census there are three older children with the surname of Washburn listed in
the Rogers household. The oldest daughter, Matilda Washburn (b. 1843 in Canada)
was well known to our family in later years. With these clues, I found the
marriage record 1846, McHenry County, Illinois for Isaac Rogers and Clarissa
Washburn. I later found proof that Clarissa's maiden name was Van Wicklin
(through a primary document of Byron B. Rogers, a son of Isaac and Clarissa). I
have a record that Clarissa was born in Corunna, Lambton, Ontario in 1819, but
I cannot guarantee that this is a primary record.)

Daniel Van Wicklin, Carolin and Diantha VW: (With assistance from
emails dated 26 & 28 November 2001 from Darrel L. Corkins it appears that

refer to the same family. Daniel first married Margaret Corkins [5 July 1854]

to the 1870 census were a son and a daughter. Dan remarries to Sarah Sawyer on

daughter appears to have been Diantha... and the son's name was just discovered

David
and Mary Van Wickley, found in the 1881 Census of Canada for Oso, Addington, Ontario.
Head of household is John Vanwickly, 33, b. Ontario, CAN, a farmer, widowed... Also, Annie Vanwickly, 12, b. Ontario and William Vanwickley, 10, b. Ontario. Also
listed in this household are David Vanwickley, age 49, b. Ont., CAN and Mary
Vanwickley, 48, b. Ontario. Are there possible connections to the family of James and Carissa Van Wicklin? In the 1861
census, this James is listed as David James Van Wicklin, age 59...so is it
possible that David Vanwickley is his oldest son and already out of the
household by 1861? As for the Vanwickley spelling, I notice that a marriage
record for James daughter, gives the name of M.J. Vanwickley marrying L.F.
Blake on 23 Dec 1865. There is also a George Vanwickley, 18, laborer, in the
household of Samuel Seward in the 1880 US Census for Phelps, Ontario, NY and
this could be James^6 Van Wicklin's grandson. James is listed in the 1871
census as unable to write. The illiteracy could help to explain the altered
spellings of the VW surname. (Same family? 1970 U.S. Census for Jamaica,
Queens, NY lists David Vanwicklin, 35, musician, with Margrett (Mary?), 34,
keeping house, Elizabeth, 14, at school, George, 5, and William H., 1)

1915 The Mountain Democrat (Placerville, CA) Auto Party Went into Creek: A bad
accident happened on the State highway Thursday evening about half a mile this
side of Smith's flat, when a large Cadillac car driven by James Van Wicklen,
the well known sheep raiser of Clarksville, went over the grade and turned
bottom up in the creek bed. Mr. Van Wicklen was accompanied by his son, Martin,
and Willie Young of Bijon, the party being on their way to Lake Tahoe. They
were driving along slowly up the grade when the Camino train came along. Mr.
Van Wicklen, thinking there might be a crossing over the railroad, was paying
particular attention to the approaching train and got too close to the edge of
the grade which is bordered at that point with a growth of grape vines. A branch
switched him in the face and a slight swerve caused the outer wheels to go over
the bank and the machine capsized into the creek bed below. The grapevines
broke the plunge of the car and held it from crushing the occupants, all of
whom were under the machine. One front wheel was completely shattered and the
steering gear and windshield broken but all of the occupants escaped injury of
any kind. 1920 US Census for Dis. 24, White Oak, El Dorado, CA lists James Van Winkle,

"there would be room for William to have been born between Charles and

more than enough room for Dora to have been born."
