(Familysearch.com lists an Elmore Van Wicklen, b. 27 May 1871, Brooklyn, NY with parents, Garret and Lidia R. [Carpenter] Van Wicklen. However, 1900 US Census indicates that Garret and Lydia had five children altogether, two of whom were still living at that time.)

Lydia's parents are William and Cornelia S. (Bennett) Carpenter.

Garret^7 Van Wicklen (Jonathan^6 Luyster, Daniel^5, Jacob^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes) was b. 9 March 1836, Wolver Hollow, L.I., NY and died 27 March 1899 in Brooklyn, NY and is bur. in Prospect Cemetery, Jamaica. He married Lydia R. Carpenter (b. 6 February 1840) on 31 December 1865 at 3rd Avenue (18th Street ME Church, Brooklyn, NY). Lydia died on 31 August 1906 and is bur. in Prospect Cemetery, Jamaica, NY. Lydia's parents were William Carpenter (b. 4 Feb 1811, Jamaica, L.I., NY) and Cornelia S. Bennett (b. 22 Sep 1814, Springfield, L.I., NY, d. 1910, bur. Prospect Cem.). In 1884, Garret and Lydia resided 269 17th Street, Brooklyn, NY.

K, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry, 2-1-1883 #471283, 916002, NY (According to American Civil War Soldiers database (Ancestry.com) Garrett Van Wicklen enlisted Co A, 3rd WI Cavalry on 28 Nov 1863, was transferred to Co K, 3rd WI Cav. and mustered out on 29 Sep 1865)

Prospect Cemetery, Jamaica, NY; Joseph^8 Van Wicklen was b. 29 August 1870, Brooklyn, NY and died 26 July 1872 at age 1 year, 10 months and 27 days--bur. Prospect Cem; William^8 C. Van Wicklen was b. 6 May 1873, Brooklyn, NY and died 20 September 1873 at age 4 months and 14 days--bur. Prospect Cem; Annie^8 L. "Annie" Van Wicklen was b. 8 June 1875, Brooklyn, NY and bap. 8 October 1884 at the 18th Street Church. She married Charles Brawley (b. May 1877, NY) abt 1909, NY. They had two daughters, Helen and Dorothy, by the time of the 1930 US Census.  (An email dated 24 Feb 2003 from Donna Young, the grand daughter of Grace Lillian Chapman Weeks, whose aunt was Lydia Carpenter Van Wicklen. Lydia was the mother of Anna (Van Wicklen) Brawley. Donna reports that she remembers her cousin, Anna and her grandmother (Grace Weeks, who always lived with Donna's family) were very close and kept in touch. Lydia was maid of honor at Grace Weeks wedding.

1880 U.S. Census for Brooklyn, Kings, NY lists Garrett Van Wicklen, b. 1836, NY, Policeman, with wife, Lydia, age 40, b. NY and son Albert, 13, and daughter, Annie, 5. 

Brooklyn, NY Directories (1888-1890) lists Albert Van Wicklen of 269 17th St., Brooklyn, NY with occupation of "painter."

Brooklyn Eagle (28 June 1881) - Public School #10, corner of 7th and 17th streets. "The Spanish Muleteer" was sung by Miss Katie Hudson and Master Albert Van Wicklen, the scholars joining in the chorus.

Brooklyn Eagle (24 October 1887, page 6) - An Unprovoked Assault: Albert Van Wicklen, of 269 Seventeenth Street, and Morris McIntyre, of 343 Flatbush Avenue, were arrested this morning by Officer Mulcahey, of the Eighth Precinct, for assaulting William Churchill, of 41 Oliver Street, New York. Churchill says the two men attacked him without provocation and asserted that he never saw them before. Judge Massey held the prisoners for trial.

Brooklyn Eagle (9 July 1889, page 6). Occurrences of interest in Brooklyn and vicinity. Garrett Van Wicklen, aged 50 years, of Fulton Street, near Hendrix, was prostrated by the heat yesterday afternoon on Bradford Street. He was removed to St. Mary's Hospital.

Brooklyn Eagle, 27 March 1899, page 5 Van Wicklen--In the 64th year of his age, Garrett, beloved husband of Lydia R. Van Wicklen. Funeral services to be held at his late residence, 162 Fifteenth street on Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock. Interment at Jamaica, L.I. Wednesday morning.

That is why is does not appear on a search of Van Wicklen.)

1930 US Census for 109th Street, Richmond Hill, Queens, NY lists Charles R. Brawley, head, 53, b. NY (NY, NY), dept head for insurance company, with wife, Anna L., 55, b. NY (NY, NY), no occ.; dau., Helen, 19, single, b. NY, and dau., Dorothy, 17, single, b. NY

Bill Haslun has done considerable genealogical work on the Carpenter surname and included the following in a 26 Feb 2003 email: From a family Bible I have Lydia Carpenter, b. 6 Feb 1839. I note you have 1840. This Bible entry is in childish handwriting so I cannot "argue" with you if you have something more solid. Lydia's parents were William Carpenter, b. 4 Feb 1811, Jamaica, L.I. and Cornelia S. Bennett, b. 22 Sep 1814, d. 1910, buried in Prospect Cem. From her obit, "she was a respected member of the 18th Street Methodist Episcopal Church," where you have Lydia and Garret marrying! Cornelia Carpenter Simmonds (a second husband, Joseph Simmonds) lived at 476 12th Street, 8th Ward, in the Federal Census of 1870 and at the same place with a daughter in 1910.  As for Carpenters, I can go back to 1303 via largely secondary sources and not considered proven before William Carpenter, b. 1605's father. The noted family genealogist, Eugene Zubrinsky Carpenter, challenges all work, so far, before that date.
