Obituary for George Washington Van Vickle written by W. A. Howard in the "Miami Republican" in Paola, Miami County, Kansas about 5 Feb 1891

George Washington Van Vickle was born in Ohio on 19 November 1846 and married Miss Mahala E. Pontious on January 1, 1874. He moved with his family to Kansas in 1878 and settled on a farm where he died on February 4, 1891. He professed faith in Christ when a boy and united with the United Brethren Church, and was licensed to preach. On coming to Kansas he united with the M.E. Church of which he remained a consistent member. While returning from the Sabbath school on January 18, 1891 his horse slipped and fell on his leg, breaking it just above the ankle. A few days after la grippe set in and soon after lung fever, of which he died. He leaves a Christian wife and two children. Brother Van Vickle was one of the most systematic and practical Christians I ever knew. He was a frequent visitor at the parsonage, and has come but one time in the past year without bringing something for the pastor's family. And never left without praying with the preacher's family. He looked after and paid more than his apportionment of the salary and benevolences. He was constantly gathering and distributing religious papers and tracts. He had me send one of his means to needy preachers in the West.
