Brooklyn Eagle, 23 December 1885, Page 4. An Irate Man: Harry Stevens' Assault on his wife's escort. The Superintendent  of a Seventeenth Ward Mission Narrowly Escapes a Thrashing. Mrs. Stevens' Peculiar Letter to her Husband--A Marriage which neither party looks upon as legal. Harry Stevens, an Eastern District young man who says he was deceived into a marriage with Mrs. Sadie Miller, in the Fall of 1884, was standing at the corner of Manhatten and Van Cott avenues last evening, when he saw his wife pass by, accompanied by Samuel Van Wickler, a Sunday school superintendent. Stevens had separated from his wife about a week ago. He had on Monday evening seen her and Van Wickler come from the hallway of 90 Manhattan avenue, where Van Wickler resides with his family, and had on that occasion followed the pair and warned Van Wickler in emphatic language not to be again seen in Mrs. Stevens' company. Consequently, when he saw the couple again last evening he dashed after them and attempted to strike Van Wickler, but was prevented by a citizen. Then ensued a bitter war of words and attempts at violence which were frustrated, but which had the effect of drawing a large crowd of men, women, and boys. Mrs. Stevens eased her mind by informing her husband in shrill tones that she did not care for him, and would go out with whom she pleased. Finally, Van Wickler walked away, going directly to the Bethlehem Mission, 93 Van Cott avenue, of which he is the leader.

The letter included in the article from Mrs. Sadie Miller to Harry Stevens... Sir--I write you this note to plainly state to you that I am sick and tired of you and your actions. You insulted me last night in the presence of a friend, and if repeated, or if I am troubled by you, I shall resort to law, as I have made friends who are willing to do anything for me as long as I try to do right. I had a right to write to you before, but as I had my mind full, I forgot it. For the last two weeks I have been trying to live a Christian life. You know as well as I do that our marriage is not legal, and when two weeks ago Saturday night you said that we had better separate, and as you will not marry me legally in Jersey City and will not leave your father's and come and live with me legally, I have made up my mind that your place is with your folks and not with me. You saw me in the ferryboat last Monday night and rather than let your father see you speak to me you went past me, but you expect me to speak to you in spite of everyone. So I am tired of it and I have joined a Sunday school, and shall do right in spite of you or any one else, and if you interfere or show any more of your tantrums, I will make you suffer. When you leave your father's and furnish me a home, and then marry me legally, I shall welcome you in my house, but until you are willing to do it, you must stay away. One night last week you saw me with the machine man and last night with the gentleman I board with. So I have given you warning, whether you take it or not. I care nothing for other men's society, as God has and will give me the strength to resist all temptation. Wishing you no harm, I am, respectfully, Mrs. S. Miller.

Mr. Stevens said that he would soon make an application for a divorce. Mr. Van Wickler, when seen at the Mission, disclaimed any intention of wrong doing. He said that the young woman had been boarding with him since last Friday, and she also joined the Mission. He added that he was on his way there when he was encountered by Stevens, and said that the latter created a scene and insulted him in an outrageous manner. "There was a class meeting at the Mission," he said, "and Mrs. Stevens being a teacher there, went with me. That is all there is to it."
