Family of Evert^6 Van Vickle

Note: It is Evert^5 's family (Evert^6's father) where the surname change to Van Vickle appears to have happened. Did Evert^5 deliberately change his surname? Here are Harry Macy's comments (letter to me dated 28 July 2000)." You mentioned that Evert^5 changed his name to Van Vickle, but remember that as long as they spoke Dutch they all pronounced the name that way (my note: i.e. "fahn vickle"). In the NY/NJ area they or the clerks that kept records knew the "W" spelling was correct even if it was pronounced "V"--but out in Virginia and Ohio apparently that wasn't understood. Clerks or schoolteachers may have told Evert or his children that Van Vickle was the "right" way to spell the name. I'm assuming that Evert himself was not very literate, and isolated from the rest of the family, he may have had no idea that he was using the "wrong" spelling. One sees this sort of thing a lot among the Dutch that migrated into non-Dutch areas."

Evert^6 Van Vickle (Evert^5 Van Wicklen, Frederick^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. abt 1790, Virginia

Married: Sarah White (b. abt. 1790, Pennsylvania) on 26 November 1809 in Ross County, OH

Children:

Aaron^7 Van Vickle, b. abt. 1812 (see information below on wills of Evert^6 and Benjamin^7 and ensuing commentary by Brian Christensen that raises questions about Aaron being a son of Evert^6.  Don Claypool, via 14 Sep 07 email concurs that Aaron is not a son of Evert and Sarah. So... where do we place Aaron?)
1. Benjamin^7 Van Vickle, b. abt. 181- [Don Claypool, in 14Sep07 email writes... "Benjamin has to be the oldest son. He purchased land in 1834. If he was at least 21 at that time he would be born in 1813 or before. He appears to be named for his maternal grandfather. A common practice for some families to name the eldest son after his mother's father in those days.]

2. Enoch^7 Van Vickle, b. 26 April 1814, Butler County, Ohio

3. William^7 Van Vickle, b. 1816, Crawford, Indiana
4. [female^7 Van Vickle, b. bef 1820 and d. before 1830] Shown in the 1820 Jennings Co, IN census in the family of Evert VanVickle. Not present in the 1830 Vermilion Co, IL census. Apparently died young. - courtesy Don Claypool via 14Sep07 email]

5. Elizabeth^7 Van Vickle, b. abt 1822, Jennings, Co., IN

6. Andrew Jackson^7 Van Vickle, b. abt 1823, Jennings Co., IN

7. Susan^7 Van Vickle, b. abt 1826, Jennings Co., IN
8. Sarah^7 Ann "Sally" Van Vickle, b. abt 1829, Vermilion Co, IL **See 13Sep08 comment in source section below**
9. John^7 Van Vickle, b. abt 1835, Vermilion Co., IL
(Evert^6 Van Vickle can be found on the 1820 Jennings County, Indiana Census (p. 79) and had 3 boys under 10 and one girl under 10 and he and wife were between 26-45 at the time. Evert^6 purchased land in Vermilion County, Illinois 4 November 1828. According to Mel Van Vickle, Enoch's siblings are William, b. 1816, Jackson, b. 1823, Elizabeth, Susan, Sarah, and John (b. 1835, IL)

(1850 Census Year in Holt, MO...a listing of Everett Van Vickle, 60, M, farmer; Sarah Van Vickle, 59, F; John VanVickle, 15, M, farmer; Jackson Van Vickle, 27, M, Farmer; Eliza Van Vickle, 24, F; and Hariet Van Vickle, 6, F. These ages would give birth years of Evert (abt. 1790), Sarah (abt. 1789), Jackson (abt. 1823), John (abt 1835), Eliza (abt. 1826), and Hariet (abt. 1844).

From Early Ohio Settlers: Purchasers of Land in Southwestern Ohio, 1800-1840. Van Vickel, Robert (A)* August 17, 1812, residence Butler range 01, township 03, section 10. Alexander Grant was R1, T3, section 4, 1813. These sections touch corners, they were neighbors. Grant is my (Naomi Emmich) ancestor, his youngest aunt married Robert VanVickle. The land patent for Grant is in his name alone, dated 1813, yet in February 1819, he and Evert (Robert's brother) Van Vickle sell the land to Jonathan Winn. The only reason to present this is that it shows Evert Van Vickle and wife Sarah (White) Van Vickle wre physically present before the justices of Butler Co, Ohio in February 1819 to sign this deed. Mel's synopsis and biography of Enoch Van Vickle would indicate they had already removed to Jennings Co, IN. I would suggest they may have moved around often, more than one direct move. If these folks could get to Iowa to have William there in 1816, they may have had cousins just across the river in what became Missouri. The army needed a ferry among other things. --from Naomi Emmich in Brian Christensen's Van Vickle Research, 1982-2001

Parents:
Evert's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Evert Van Wicklen

Evert^6 Van Vickle
(Evert^5 Van Wicklen, Frederick^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. abt 1790, Virginia [Commentary of Don Claypool via 14 Sep07 email: "Evert apparently taken to Ross Co, OH by his parents. Was in Butler Co., OH by 1814. Evert and his brother Robert sold land in Butler Co, OH to Jonathan Winn in Feb 1819. Sarah signed as Evert's wife. Evert probably moved his family to Jennings Co., IN shortly after this where he appeared in the 1920 census. Apparently joined there later by brother-in-law, William White, who was still in Butler Co, OH in the 1820 census. In 1828, Evert VanVickle and William White moved to Vermilion Co, IL. Evert appeared there in 1830 and 1840 census. Evert had an original land claim from the Federal Govt, 4 Nov 1828 in what later would become Blount Township, Vermilion, IL. He had another in 1834 in what would become Newell Township. Sometime before 1843, Evert left for Daviess Co, MO taking all his children except Enoch who stayed behind. Children Jackson and Elizabeth married there in 1843. Eldest son, Benjamin wrote a will in Holt Co., MO, 17 Dec 1846, and Evert's daughter Sarah [Sally] married there in 1849. Evert appears in the 1850 Holt Co, MO census.] Evert married Sarah White, b. abt 1791, in PA. Her parents are Benjamin and Susannah [Justus] White. [Don Claypool via 14Sep07 email notes that the link between Sarah and these parents is not proven. However, the fact that she named her first son Benjamin lends credence.]

Children: Aaron^7 Van Vickle, b. abt. 1812 (see more information on Aaron on his family page)[most likely Aaron is not a son of Evert and Sarah. However, he is permitted to "hang out" on this page until we locate him properly]; Benjamin^7 Van Vickle, b. 181- [Possibly named for his maternal grandfather. He had an original land claim in 1834, Vermilion Co, IL in what later became Blount Twp. If he was at least 21 at time of claim, he would be born 1813 or earlier, making him the eldest son. Elizabeth is mentioned in the will of her father Evert and her brother Benjamin. She may have been born late in the year of 1821 - courtesy Don Claypool via 14Sep07 email]; Andrew Jackson^7 Van Vickle, b. abt 1823, Jennings Co., IN. He married Elizabeth McMahan, 25 July 1843, Davies County, MO; Susan^7 Van Vickle, b. abt 1826, Jennings Co., IN; Sarah^7 Ann "Sally" Van Vickle, b. abt 1829, Vermilion Co, IL. She married Andrew Odell 27 May 1849, Holt Co., MO. They had at least one daughter, Lavisa^8 Odell who married Lawrence McCrory **See 13Sep08 comment in source section below**; John^7 Van Vickle, b. abt 1835, Vermilion Co., IL. He married Elizabeth L. Divers, 23 July 1854, Holt County, MO. John enlisted with the Confederate Army in 1862. He was a bugler and escaped the enemy at one time. [see source section below] In 1900 John is living with his deceased brother Jackson's wife Lena and two of her children, in Indian territory. He is listed as single and 62 years old. (See source section below)

IGI, familysearch.com lists a Sally Ann Van Vickle who marries Andrew Odell on 27 May 1848 in Holt, MO. Perhaps Sally is another sib or may even be Susan or Sarah above. Note that Elizabeth Van Vickle marries a John ODell in 1843. (Does this contradict 1850 US Census information above that has Eliza in household of her parents in 1850 and presumably not married to John Odell?) Ancestry.com lists a Sarah Ann Van Vickle as the daughter of Evert-Everet and Sarah (White) Van Vickle [submitted by bobmil@earthlink.net, File name 77405]. This is additional evidence that the Sarah who marries Andrew O'Dell somehow belongs on this page.

Additional information on Sarah (Sally) Van Vickle--supplied by Betty J. Elliott in email 5 April 2001 who is descended from Sally. Sarah (Sally) Van Vickle married Andrew D. O'Dell on 27 May 1849 in Holt Co., Missouri. Andrew served in the civil war. Andrew remarried to Adelaide Dority on 28 April 1879 in Holt Co., Missouri. Andrew had 12 children, presumably by his first wife. Andrew and Sarah's daughter Luvisia O'Dell is Betty Elliott's great grandmother. She is listed as Louisa on most documents, and she had a twin sister Ludisia who apparently died young. Another sister Alice married Bob Farmer and they made their home in the Chicago area.

Luvisia married Lawrence McCoy, son of Robert Hugh McCrory, and his 2nd wife, a widow of James Halsey, Elitha (Potter) Halsey. Lawrence and Luvisia has 12 children, with 5 living to marry and have issue. They were Francis (Frank), Marvin McCrory, Hattie, Maude, Lawrence (Lonnie) and Leroy (Lee). Frank married Dana Parks, 7 March 1907, in Oklahoma--before statehood. They had Betty Elliott's mother, Wilma, and a daughter, Mildred. Wilma married Leon (lee) Alexander Files in June 1926 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Betty was born 10 January 1929 in Bristow, Oklahoma. Mildred's first marriage to Pete Waltman ended in divorce, no children. Her 2nd marriage to Kenneth Laster ended in divorce with two boys, Frank and Kenny.

VANVICKLE, BENJAMIN, will dated 17 Dec 1846 - Bequests to following: Andrew Jackson Odell, son of John & Elizabeth Odell, when of age; John Odell (apparently a brother) is to pay testator's 3 brothers: Jackson, Everett, and John Vanvickle, $50.00: to Will Vanvickle's daughter: to Susan and Sally Vanvickle; balance to above John Vanvickle. Horse to Enoch Vanvickle. Leaves his father a note he left with John B. Long. Wit: John W. Man and Eppy Man. Recorded 9 Feb 1847 (W-8) [Don Claypool via 14 Sep 07 email raises the following questions about Everett. "Since there are only 5 sons of Evert & Sarah, then Benjamin would only have four brothers: Enoch, William, Jackson, and John. Everett must be a first or middle name for Enoch or William? Enoch would probably not be listed among the three brothers as he was still living in Illinois. Enoch was given a horse. William, who was still alive, got nothing, although his daughter did. Could William's proper name be Evert William Van Vickle using his middle name to stop confusion? Would Benjamin call him both Everett and Will in the same document?"]

VANVICKEL, EVERET, will written 2 Nov 1852 - Sons: Jackson, John, William & Enoch Vanvickel. Daughters, Susan & Sarah. Elizabeth Odell, wife of John Odell. Wife, Sarah. Wit: William Mann, J. B. Williams. Recorded 20 Dec 1852. Exr. Jackson Vanvickel. Sec, Jacob Claggons & Daniel David (B-54 & 139)

(commentary by Brian Christensen - 31 Aug 2006 email - Everet Vanvickle wrote his will in 1852. His son Benjamin wrote his will in 1846. Benjamin mentioned brothers and sisters, but did not mention a possible brother named Aaron. Everet mentioned children, but did not mention Aaron. I know that Aaron died in 1849, so perhaps Everet didn't list a son Aaron because he was deceased, however shouldn't Benjamin have listed him? Wouldn't Everet bequest anything to his deceased son's family -- especially when Aaron died only two years earlier? Maybe there was no contact between Aaron's family in Hancock County, IL and to the Vanvickles in Holt Co., MO... or should we assume that Aaron might not be a son of Everet?)

1880 - History of Iroquois County: together with historic notes on the Northwest, gleaned from early authors, old maps and manuscripts, private and official correspondence, and other authentic, though, for the most part out-of-the-way sources; Chicago: H.H. Hill and Co., 1880, 1219 pgs [p, 550] Ben Butterfield looked out this route from Lockport to Danville in April, 1831, on his way from the former to the latter place. Prior to Butterfield making this trail and as early as 1829, Enoch Van Vickle, of Vermilion County, came to this neighborhood hunting bees; the early settlers of that county often came for that purpose. Samuel Copeland, of Blount Township, same county, informed E.S. Ricker, in 1879, that Solomon Kooder was on Spring Creek trail in the fall of 1832, hunting bees, and discovered a vast quantity of them, most all through the timber; the ground was covered with acorns, and wild artichokes grew in great abundance along the skirt of the prairie. Kooder reported the fact to his neighbors, Samuel Copeland, Evart Van Vickle, his two sons, Enoch and Benjamin, David Reeiz, William Ross, William Wright, and Lewis Swisher, immediately drove 300 hogs to this creek to fatten. Copeland, Van Vickle and his son Benjamin rode the whole length of the creek, crossed at its mouth, and back to their camp on the other side, and saw no hogs or any signs of them. Some the the owners came frequently to look after their property, and when fattened, they drove them away. There were a few left, and for the three succeeding years the same men hunted their winter port in this timber. At this time, in the fall of 1835, they sold their interest in the hogs on Spring Creek to Lindsey and Lehigh, and after this they were common property for all settlers.

Mary E., b. Dec 1888, 11, single, b. TX (MO, TX), at school, William, son, b. May 1893, TX (MO, TX), 7, and John Van Vickle, uncle, b. Jan 1838, MO (MD, MD), 62, single, farm laborer.

2008 - 30 Mar08 emailed remark from Brian Christensen about Ross County - I found Everet and Sarah [White] Van Vickle's 1809 marriage recorded on little slips of paper at the historical society/library next door to the court house in Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH. We know they were residents of Pickaway County. One would assume they were living in Ross County at the time of their marriage and then moved to Pickaway County. I learned from looking at some maps that their residence was the same in that shortly after 1810 they redrew the county lines and their home then fell in Pickaway County.

13 Sep 08 email from Michael Herrell [excerpts] -- I notice on your webpage for Evert Vanvickle that there is some discussion re his daughter, Sarah [Sally] Vanvickle. This discussion seems to be whether Sarah and Sally are the same person or whether there is another daughter as yet uncovered. I think I can shed some light... First, the 1846 will of Benjamin Vanvickle references Sally. The marriage record for Andrew Odell in 1849 references Sally Ann. Evert Vanvickle's will references Sarah. The 1860 Holt County census references Andrew Odell's wife as Sarah A. Finally, the tombstone of Andrew Odell says "Andrew Odell, husband of Sarah Vanvickle."

The answer to whether Sarah and Sally are one person lies in a common practice of the 19th century of using diminutives for given names. A quick Google search on diminutives finds that Sally is probably the most common diminutive used for Sarah. Therefore, Sarah A. and Sally Ann are almost certainly the same person.

As to whether Sarah Vanvickle is the daughter of Evert, the evidence seems substantial. The census records show he has a daughter of the correct age. She marries in Holt county about the time he relocates there. Sarah is named as his daughter in his will.

At this point re: Evert and Sarah, I have found only two myteries. First, it is not impossible but strange that the 1840 census has Evert in both Vermillon Co., IL and Daviess Co., Missouri. The ages for Evert and his wife agree as do many of the other ages for what we know about his family. I have no other likely explanation for this than that he moved in 1840 and was enumerated twice.

Second, and this is really odd, the 1850 Holt County census has a household for Andrew Odell. At this point his wife should be Sarah or Sally in the census; however, his wife is listed as Mary. The age and state of origin [IL] for Mary are the same as what one would expect for Sarah and I doubt that Sarah A. or Sally Ann would also have a given name Mary. It may be just a mistake in the transcription by the census enumerator.

...I am descended from Andrew Odell/Sarah Vanvickle through their daughter Lavisa Odell who married Lawrence McCrory--my maternal great grandfather. --Lawrence Herell
