Family of Mary Ann Davis

Mary Ann Davis had a relationship with Gates^7 Van Wicklin of Brighton, Ontario, CAN beginning around 1865. This relationship produced two sons, Sherman^8 Van Wicklin (b. 1866, Brighton, Ont.) and Edward^8 Van Wicklin (b. 1868, Brighton, Ont.).

Mary Ann must have left Gates Van Wicklin within a year or two after the birth of Edward because her daughter Charlotte Fuller (by her marriage to Joseph Fuller) was born about 1871. The 1871 Census of Ontario lists Gates Van Wicklin with Sherman, age 5, but no Edward or Mary Ann. Presumably she was with Joseph Fuller by 1871 and perhaps still had custody of Edward. The 1881 Census of Ontario lists Gates Van Wicklin with sons, Sherman, 15, and Edward, 13 in the household. The 1881 Census of Ontario lists Joseph Fuller, 45 (b. Ont.), farmer, with wife, Mary Ann Fuller, 30, b. Ont., and daughter, Charlotte Fuller, 9, son, Samuel Fuller, 8, son, Enoch Fuller, 6, and daughter, Deborah Fuller, 4. All children b. Ontario and religion of all is listed as Church of England. Census place was Hindon & Anson, Victoria North, Ontario.

Mary Ann Davis is the daughter of Enoch L. Davis, Jr. (b. 1814/15 in Lower Canada) and Mary Jane Graham (b. abt 1821). Mary Ann's grandparents (father's side) are Enoch Davis, Sr. (b. 14 Mar 1784, d. 22 Oct 1865) and Rachel (Karr) Davis (b. 2 Oct 1790, d. 22 Oct 1865)

Information from Leslie Wilson, researcher for all settlers of Durham Co. (Hope, Clarke, Darlington twps) from the time of the arrival of the first official white settlers in June of 1793 to June 1813.

"During that period there were only three men by the surname of Davis in the entire county. One was Enoch Davis who showed up in Darlington Twp, Durham Co., abt 1811 and on Nov. 25, 1812 married Rachel Karr/Kerr, dau of Norris Karr and his wife Mary (Burk) Karr. Mary is sister of three other Darlington Twp. settlers, John Burk, Sr., James Burk, and Luke Burk, and their sister, Rachel Burk.

In 1793 there were no white settlers in Darlington Twp. By the fall of 1794, the families of Roger Conat, John Trull, and John Burk, Sr. had arrived. (Mary Burk's brother)

Enoch was born March 14, 1784 in USA, possibly NY or VT...but that is only a guess. He died Oct 22, 1865 in Whitby East Twp, Ontario, Can. West and is buried in that township, as is his wife Rachel, b. Oct 2, 1790 and died May 8, 1858. Although Enoch was present on 4 June 1812 in Durham County, Upper Can. to take the Militia Oath, he went back to the US shortly thereafter, as his first child, Aaron was b. there Sept 1813. His second child, Enoch, Jr. was b. 1814/15 in Lower Canada (Quebec). I do not know where his third child, Norris, who was born 30 Sept 1817, was born, but his remaining children were apparently b. in Upper Can. As Aaron was b. in USA and Enoch in Quebec, I surmise that he may have gone to Vermont shortly after his marriage. A lot of the Durham Co. settlers had ties to VT and from there some went to the eastern twp of Quebec again, a place where a lot of people from VT had settled, and some migrated from VT to the eastern twps and then to Durham Co, Upper Can.
