NY, at home. 27 July 1885 - There is an article in the NY Times dated 27 July 1885 that almost certainly refers to this Ellen and her husband, John. A widow's suit for damages. A suit for $20,000 damages has been filed in the Supreme Court, Brooklyn by Mrs. Ellen C. Van Wickle, widow of John L. Van Wickle against John Mangles who keeps a saloon at Graham and Van Cott Avenues. The plaintiff alleges that on Dec.23, 1884, her husband met his death through liquor supplied by Mangles. The latter says he sold only one drink to Van Wickle from the effects of which he became intoxicated. The widow says after giving her husband the liquor, Mangles placed him in a damp room where he was exposed to cold. Death resulted on the same day from heart disease brought on by the intoxication. 1888/1889 Brooklyn NY Directories 1888-1890 lists Ellen Van Wickel, widow of John living at 546 Graham Ave, Brooklyn, NY. Lowville, NY. Albert Kieb, 78, dies. He was b. 9 Aug 1875 in Croghan, NY and m. Julia Schleinder on 4 Jan 1899 in Croghan. He was a retired mason and lived in Lowville for over 30 years. He was survived by three brothers: Romanus Kieb, Albenus Kieb both of Croghan, and George Kieb of Brooklyn (Ruth Harvey, via 23 Aug 2005 email, provided me with a transcript of the Van Wickel burials in Cypress Hills Cemetery. The list contains 26 names of Van Wickels and relatives beginning with Richard Van Wickel (b. 1798) and his wife, Phoebe (b. 1805) and some of their children, grandchildren and other relatives. The list includes name, address at time of death, funeral home, grave #, age at death, cause of death, and date and place of death. Richard and Phoebe's son, John L. and his wife, Ellen C. are buried here. Children of John L. and Ellen C.
